University Overview

Black Hills State University is a liberal arts university located near the Black Hills in Spearfish, South Dakota. The Black Hills of South Dakota give us the unique opportunity to explore and thrive in the outdoors while studying and seeking inspiration. South Dakota is an expansive, sparsely populated midwestern U.S. state where rolling prairies give way to the dramatic Black Hills National Forest. Black Hills is home to 2 historical monuments carved right into towering granite peaks: Mt. Rushmore, the iconic depiction of 4 revered U.S. presidents, and Crazy Horse Memorial, a tribute to the storied Native American tribal leader.

BHSU is big enough to offer unique opportunities for students to pursue their goals along their personal journey towards success but small enough to allow students to develop valuable personal relationships with faculty and staff.

Close to 4,000 students attend classes at our 123-acre campus in Spearfish, at sites in Rapid City and Pierre, and through distance offerings. Enrollment comes from all 64 out of 66 counties in South Dakota, 43 states, and 29 countries
